On Sunday, July 10, at 6:45 p.m., Officer James Brown arrived at
the Mason home to fill out a missing person report. The report states,
“ Received a call to go to 6807 Walker Road Mason residence about three
missing people. When I arrived, I was met by a Paula Griffith, wife to
Kenneth Griffith and Martha Mason, wife to Richard Mason. They
wanted to report their husbands, and a friend had gone three wheeling
on 7/9/88 and haven’t returned. The three left sometime around six or
seven p.m. And stated they would only be gone about three hours and
would return a little after dark.
“Richard Mason, 49, left on a Honda Big Red 250cc Big Red
three-wheeler color red. He was wearing blue jeans with a blue work
shirt which has snaps and the sleeves were cut off and a blue cap. Also,
he has a long gray beard with black hair.” According to later testimony,
he weighed over two hundred pounds.
The report described that Kenneth Griffith, 22, was wearing a green
Air Force flight suit. Kenneth was wearing a white cap with an orange T.
He had bright-red hair. According to Paula’s testimony, his height was
just over six feet tall and he weighed over two hundred pounds. He also
was riding a Honda Big Red three-wheeler.
Earl Smock was described in the report as 24 and also wearing a
green Air Force flight suit and a ball cap. In later testimony, Paula Griffith
Kirby said his height was around six feet four, and he weighed over
two hundred pounds. Mr. Smock was described in the report as having
